No Crisis Will Hold President Obama Back

On Election Day as Saturn in Virgo (history made by ordinary citizens) exactly opposed Uranus in Pisces (record breaking change that dissolves all barriers), Senator Barack Obama was elected President of the United States.

Now that the election is over, pundits are already speculating that the president-elect will have to scale back or postpone many of his plans that helped him win the election. Many of these pundits appear to be basing their assumption on a line in Obama’s Election night speech: “Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term.” What the pundits and the politicians need to understand is that you cannot view this ground-breaking election and president-elect Obama in the same context of previous administrations. If president-elect Obama seriously intends to “dial down” by merely making small alterations to issues such as energy, healthcare, foreign policy, etc. due to the economic crisis or any other excuse, his presidency will be a complete failure.

The Sun in our planetary makeup represents who we really are. President-elect Obama was born with the Sun in its “home” sign Leo, the sign of the leader. The last president to have the Sun in Leo was Bill Clinton. Expressing the fun-loving and entertaining side of this planetary energy, Bill Clinton enjoyed being president more than making major changes during his administration.

“Change we can believe in,” “hope” and a “new vision” is represented by Obama’s Leo Sun challenging his Neptune in Scorpio. Neptune is the visionary, the idealist. Neptune energy has the ability to dissolve any boundaries or barriers that stand in its way. With Neptune in Scorpio, Obama likely has a good “b.s. detector” enabling him to see people’s hidden motivations and work with them or around them to get things done. Mars in Scorpio challenging a supercharged* Neptune in Aquarius on Election Day reflected voters’ strong desire to create a new and unified vision for America.

There have been a lot of comparisons between our current economic climate and the Great Depression. Franklin D. Roosevelt was born with the Sun in Leo’s opposite sign Aquarius challenging his Neptune in Taurus (Scorpio’s opposite sign). FDR helped the American people regain faith in themselves by taking swift action during his first 100 days in office to alleviate the financial crisis. In both men’s charts, their Sun/Neptune alignment is in fixed signs, an energy that is determined to implement their vision. The fixed signs (Taurus/Leo/Scorpio/Aquarius) relate to fiscal matters. Taurus rules banks and finance, and FDR’s Neptune in Taurus reformed the banking system. As the opposite sign to Taurus, Scorpio rules debt, lending, opaque financial products, and insurance. All of these elements comprise our current financial crisis and these will be transformed in the Obama administration. The emphasis on financial reform is further reinforced by Obama’s Venus (finances) conjoining the USA’s natal Venus in Cancer, representing the nation’s financial values. Obama’s natal Saturn in its “home” sign Capricorn conjoining the USA’s second house (economy/financial system) Pluto in Capricorn shows his administration will enact and enforce financial regulation that seeks to remedy the imbalance that has greatly benefited the privileged few (the plutocrats).

President-elect Obama projects a cool, calm and steady temperament, a very important quality for a Commander-in-Chief. He comes across as friendly but in an impersonal way. This is reflected by his Aquarius ascendant.**Aquarius and its planetary ruler Uranus, represent the humanitarian. Expressed at its highest level, this is a progressive energy that desires to treat everyone equally, regardless of class, race, gender, or background. Obama was born with Uranus in Leo which opposes the USA’s natal Aquarius Moon, reflecting his popularity with the public and his rapid rise to leadership. Aquarius/Uranus is the energy of revolutionary reform. The public expects Obama to be a new and different leader who is more attuned with the future and unafraid to break from the status quo and the past.

Obama’s Mercury in Leo opposite Jupiter in Aquarius combined with his Sun/Neptune alignment represents his ability to draw large audiences to hear his message that has the ability to cross all ideological lines. He believes in freedom and equality for all and believes in policies that benefit the common good. Obama’s Mercury (books)/Jupiter (publishing) reflect he is the author of two bestselling books whose titles reflect his planetary energies. “Dreams of My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance” chronicles his bi-racial identity and his visit to Kenya to discover more about his late father. Obama’s Moon is in Mercury-ruled Gemini located in the fourth house of his chart. This is the Moon’s natural “home” in the horoscope as it represents childhood, family and ancestral heritage. Obama’s Sun in Leo (the father) challenging Neptune (dreams) motivated him to write about his feelings (Moon in Gemini). “The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream” reflects Obama’s views on faith (Neptune) and his personal (Sun) ideological views (Jupiter). Once again, “Dream” is in the title.

The “American Dream” is something politicians and presidents speak of. It’s a concept that is uniquely American because the USA’s natal Mars in Gemini challenges the USA Neptune in Virgo. Located in the ninth house of the USA chart, it can either represent the nation’s highest ideals or its delusions. This alignment has mostly been expressed through fighting or being at war (Mars) against something (Mars in the USA seventh house representing others), that goes against current ideals. Neptune rules oil, drugs, and belief systems such as communism. The USA has waged war over all of these things.

Mars is action and our physical energy. President-elect Obama’s Mars is in Virgo, conjoining the USA Neptune. He was the only presidential candidate against the war in Iraq. His highest challenge will be not to transfer the war theatre from Iraq to the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, but to put his energies into getting the nation to actively work with him to manifest the other side of this alignment: working for peace in the nation and the world.

Virgo is the sign of the worker and doing things efficiently and precisely. Obama’ Mars in Virgo harmonizes with his Saturn in Capricorn demonstrating that he is disciplined and resourceful. He is not afraid to tackle the tough issues. Combined with his Sun and Mercury in his sixth house (the natural house of Virgo in the horoscope), he will implement policies that focus on Virgo-ruled issues that affect people's day to day lives: employment, healthcare, infrastructure, and energy.

Obama’s idealistic spirit has been compared to JFK. Obama was born in 1961, the year Kennedy became president, so his planetary makeup contains the energies of that time. The planetary energies we are experiencing today and over the next few years directly relate to the energies of the 1960s and the Great Depression. The series of Saturn/Uranus oppositions that began on Election Day echo the Saturn/Uranus oppositions of the 1960s, when Saturn was in Pisces and Uranus in Virgo. Obama’s “yes we can” reflects reviving the positive energies of that era that made what was considered impossible (civil rights, going to the Moon) become possible. The energies now and in the future foster cooperative change, work, and sacrifice to manifest the vision. The oppositions between Saturn in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces will be challenging Obama’s Mars in Virgo throughout 2009, urging him to be like FDR and take immediate action to begin implementing his agenda. Any resistance he faces in Washington can be easily remedied by taking his case directly to the majority of the electorate who voted for him.

*Planets do not really change direction, but appear to from Earth’s vantage point. When a planet appears to be motionless in the sky from changing direction, its energies are more prominent.

**The Ascendant is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth.
