Mars in Libra: Energy That’s Fair and Balanced

Mars, the planet of action and energy, will be in Libra from August 19 – October 4, 2008. In Libra, Mars energy must recognize the universal law that for every action, there is an equal reaction. Libra is symbolized by the scales which must be equally weighted to be in balance.

General Influences:
Mars is our physical energy and what motivates us to take action. Libra is about being in balance and harmony with our self and in our relationships. Mars in Libra demands that actions taken be fair and balanced for all. Libra rules all types of partnerships, especially intimate partners/spouses. Heated discussions or breakups could occur if one person in the relationship feels their needs are not being equally met.

If someone or something in your life is irritating you, this represents where you are out of balance and need to take action to bring harmony. Irritations can show up physically through inflammation. Libra rules the kidneys and the lower back. Since Mars is a very physical energy and Libra likes companionship, this is a good time to exercise with a partner and engage in activities for two such as dancing, tennis, and the martial arts.

Mars last spent time in Libra from September 8 – October 23, 2006. Business alliances, partnerships, and financial counterparties are emphasized. New alliances quickly form and established ones can encounter difficulties/break up. Since Libra is ruled by Venus, banks and the financial sector in general are emphasized. Libra’s scales also represent justice, and there will probably be an acceleration of legal settlements with financial firms over the various investment products sold during the credit boom, such as auction rate securities. There could also be an acceleration between lenders and investors agreeing to write down the value of loans, along with banks agreeing to sell foreclosed homes at much lower prices to get them off the books.

Libra rules beauty, fashion, interior design, the art market, jewelry, and public relations. These products and services could get a temporary lift between August 30 to September 23 when Mercury (communications) and Venus join Mars in Libra.

Libra is the sign of the diplomat. While Mars is in Libra, parties put more effort and energy into being fair and reaching agreement. Venus/Libra energies usually desire peace and harmony, but Mars can tend to make all sides more aggressive about promoting their own agenda.

Countries and leaders particularly affected by Mars in Libra: USA/President Bush and Secretary of State Rice, NATO, Afghanistan/President Karzai, BURMA, CHINA, Cuba, France/President Sarkozy, GEORGIA/RUSSIA/Prime Minister Putin, Israel, North Korea, UK. Tensions could really flare up the week of September 7, as Mars interacts with Jupiter (7th), Mercury (8th), and Venus (11th).

Key Dates:
Mars enters Libra on Tuesday, August 19. The Moon (emotional outlook)will be in Aries, Mars’s ruler on the day* ruled by Mars. The Aries Moon will oppose Mars in Libra. This can be a time of volatile emotions and impulsive and temperamental behavior.

September 7: Mars challenges Jupiter in Capricorn on the day of the First Quarter Moon in Sagittarius, a sign ruled by Jupiter. These energies tend to be impulsive, overconfident, and almost militant over what is believed to be true, so that neither party is really eager to reach agreement. What makes this especially intense is that both Jupiter and Pluto (power/secrets/debt/nuclear issues) are stationary direct**, making their energies extra powerful now.

September 8: Mercury conjoins Mars. Thoughts and desires merge. It’s possible that if one side talks long enough, the other side will break down. It’s easy to get distracted now, so concentrate on one thing at a time.

September 11: Venus and Mars conjoin in Libra, heightening sexual attraction and intimate relationships. People tend to passionately express their convictions now.

September 23: Mercury and Mars conjoin in Libra. There’s a tendency to act too fast. Agreements could come together quickly, but are not likely to last with Mercury moving retrograde the following day. (More on Mercury in Libra and the retrograde cycle in an upcoming post.)

*Each day of the week resonates to a planetary energy: Monday/Moon, Tuesday/Mars, Wednesday/Mercury, Thursday/Jupiter, Friday/Venus, Saturday/Saturn, Sunday/Sun.

**Planets do not really move backwards, but appear to from Earth’s vantage point.
